The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Prineville District Office, is in the beginning stages of a design and planning process for the Cline Buttes Recreation Area. This recreation area will cover 31,000 acres of BLM land between Sisters, Redmond and Bend.
The initial public scoping meeting was conducted on June 8, 2006, at the Eagle Crest Resort outside Redmond, I hope everyone was able to attend the meeting. The BLM has now planned several field tours of the Cline Buttes area for the end of July and the first week in August.
Tours will be conducted for the following areas:
Maston Plateau - Area east of Cline Falls Highway.
Buttes/Tumalo Canal ACEC - The area between Barr Road and Cline Falls Highway
Central Plateau - The area between Barr Road and Fryrear Canyon
Canyons - Fryrear Canyon and Buckhorn Canyon/Deep Canyon area north of State Hwy 126
Sunday, July 30 Tuesday, August 1 Thursday, August 3 Saturday, August 5
(Morning) (Evening) (Evening) (Morning)
1. Central Plateau 1. Central Plateau 1. Maston Plateau 1. Maston Plateau|
2. Buttes 2. Canyons 2. Canyons 2. Buttes
Two different tours will be held each day. Weekday evening tours will start at 6PM, weekend morning tours will start at 9AM. Tours will take approximately 2 1/2 hours.
Tours for Maston Plateau and Buttes will meet at the south entrance/information board to BLM lands at the intersection of Barr Road/Gerking Market Road. Tours for the Central plateau area and Canyons will meet at the north entrance/information board to BLM lands at the intersection of Barr Road/State Highway 126.
BLM will provide several vehicles/drivers for each tour. Those wishing to travel in their own vehicle should use a high clearance vehicle. A small amount of hiking will be required for these tours. The
"Canyons" tour will require the most hiking - up to one mile total length.
A variety of maps and aerial photographs will be provided for tour participants.
The BLM is close to having a Cline Buttes Plan website up and running. The tentative date for public meetings to work on road and trail system layouts will be the week of September 4th, with one evening meeting mid-week and daytime meetings on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 8th and 9th).
